THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Human Resource Management or HRM is the strategic approach to nurturing and supporting employees and ensure a positive workplace environment. It could be widely described as "Organizing, Coordinating and Managing employees to carry out an Organization's Vision, Mission and Goals."

HOW IT BEGINS;

In the path of Human Resource Management is developed, the story goes even 5,000 years ago in the history where skilled and unskilled  slaves, serfs, soldiers and other indentured servants  needed managing to get done works to wealthy rulers, landlords and tribal chiefs properly. Workers subject to strict supervision and for offences they were physically threatened severely. Through supervision and punishments, supervisors select ideal people to ideal tasks that,  The origin of Talent Management emerged from this early HRM what they called as "Putting the right people in to the right roles".

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ERA;

The modern concern about Managing People comes from the Industrial Revolution which begins 1850-1900 Era. People got away mostly from Farming and Household activities in order to join Industrial Work in Large Scale yFactories where there were Inflexible working hours with noisy and highly unhygienic circumstances  and with no self-management working atmosphere. So the supervisor played a very strict role to monitor people which drag the system to a Foreman Empire.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBLE ERA;

Paternalistic Approach or the Owner took care of the Worker just like a father take care of his Children, offered a number of concessions and facilities to overcome the problems caused by number of Trade Unions at the time. Even though this was a Compulsion rather than a Philosophy, Workers had the chance to entertain reduced Working Hours, more facilitated work place and model villages to themselves.

SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT ERA;

In early 1900s, period of unionism emerged to protect workers rights along with systematic Management leads to Scientific Management which called as Taylorism sort to find the "one Best Way to do every job".so the jobs divided in to small categories which lead any unskilled person to do any part of it which leads employees to specialized in their own jobs. Taylorism followed by psychological principles to manage, not only getting technical conditions right but also getting the human conditions right of  workers. Such as focus on Job Satisfaction, appreciating skills and abilities etcetera. Along with the Organizational re-structures and the rise of trade unions to protect employee rights , this period of time consider as, a period of welfarism and Industrial Psychology.

HUMAN RELATIONS ERA;

This Short Period called as Industrial Psychology Era where the researches concluded at Human Factor at the workplace. Management should take care of human relations in order to get a Better Productivity.

BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE ERA;

Happy Workers are productive Workers. The concept of this era leads Human Resource Management in to a very new aspect as even as seen on today. Development of two-way Communication, Participation of workers on Decision Making and Management Development were key practices in this Revolutionary era.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ERA;

When a very large number of Workers working together, the necessity of engagement in Recruiting, Developing, Training  and Welfare of workers needed to be done by an authorized person. So the "Industrial Relations Department" established in Large Scale Companies. With the time passed by, the number of employees increased so massively that Industrial Relations Department had to do more managerial and supervisory stuff that they had to change as  the "Personal Department"
 
With the increase of competition in both Market Share and Talents in Human Resources, the new Era treated Human Resource as the Prime Source of an Organization's  Well-being. Human Resource Planning, Recruitment and Selection, Appraisal, Promotions, Transfers, Quality of Working Life, Compensation, Compliances were managed by the Personal Department at that time.

The Human Resource Management is a mixture of Labour welfare and Personal Management .HRM aims at maximizing employee performance in accordance to the objectives of the Organization.

CONCLUTION;

The evolution of Human Resource Management has been carved, shaped and decorated by variety of social aspects such as Economics, Technology, Political Influences,  Ethical Values forces over Centuries. From purely Controlling and Managing Employees, HRM has evolved in to a strategic way in order to benefits the Organization along with the increasing of the Productivity of existing employees and determining the needs of them.
